AirAsia Aviation Group Ushers in New Era of Operational Excellence and Regional Expansion with Appointment of Veteran Captain Suresh Bangah at AirAsia Philippines

AirAsia Aviation Group Limited (AAAGL) has announced a transformative leadership change as the airline appoints Captain Suresh Bangah as the new President and General Manager of AirAsia Philippines. This strategic leadership move signals the beginning of an ambitious new chapter focused on sustainable expansion, operational excellence, and digital innovation for the low-cost carrier.

Captain Suresh succeeds Ricky Isla, who retires after six impactful years of service as the head of AirAsia Philippines. Isla will continue to offer guidance as Chief Advisor to the GM during the transition period, ensuring continuity and stability as the airline accelerates toward its next phase of evolution.

A Veteran Leader with Deep AirAsia Roots

With nearly three decades of aviation experience, Captain Suresh is no stranger to AirAsia’s operations or culture. He brings a profound understanding of the organization’s core values and a vision aligned with the Group’s mission of democratizing air travel. His career with AirAsia began in 2003 as a First Officer and gradually evolved through roles of increasing responsibility—Pilot Instructor, Auditor, Chief Pilot, Director of Flight Operations, and most recently, Group Director of Flight Operations at AAAGL.

Throughout his journey, Captain Suresh has demonstrated exceptional leadership and a results-driven mindset, playing pivotal roles in streamlining operational efficiency and maintaining industry-leading safety standards. His appointment is seen as a strategic decision to ensure that AirAsia Philippines continues its upward trajectory in the competitive aviation landscape.

Bo Lingam, Group CEO of AirAsia Aviation Group, said: “Captain Suresh steps into this role at an important juncture. As AirAsia progresses into our next chapter, the Philippines remains a key pillar in our regional strategy—with strong potential in inter-island connectivity and broader regional integration into Asean and North Asia, among others.

“With extensive management and industry experience—particularly in upholding the gold standard in safety and operational excellence, and a deep commitment to guest-centricity and Allstar values, Captain Suresh is well placed to build on the strong foundations laid by his predecessor, Ricky Isla.

Continued Focus on Operational Growth and Customer Experience

As part of its 2025 growth roadmap, AirAsia Philippines plans to increase its fleet size to nineteen aircraft, a move designed to cater to the surging travel demand both domestically and across the Asia-Pacific region. This expansion is expected to strengthen AirAsia’s position as a preferred carrier in the Philippines, reinforcing its commitment to accessible and affordable air travel.

In 2024, AirAsia Philippines flew close to seven million guests, a figure that underscores its role as a vital player in the country’s aviation industry. Under Captain Suresh’s leadership, the airline aims to maintain a ninety percent load factor in 2025, reflecting high seat occupancy and operational profitability.

The focus will not only be on increasing flight frequency and destinations but also on leveraging technological advancements to enrich the overall guest experience. The airline intends to roll out more digitally enabled services and value-driven ancillary products to enhance convenience, flexibility, and personalization throughout the passenger journey.

“Under Ricky’s leadership, the airline navigated one of the most turbulent periods in aviation history—stabilising operations, keeping our people grounded in purpose, and restoring confidence in the brand. We thank him for his steady leadership and are grateful that he will continue to support the transition as Advisor.”

Enhancing Air Connectivity Across Asia

AirAsia Philippines is poised to play a critical role in the Group’s wider strategy of increasing cross-border connectivity across its network of over one hundred thirty destinations. Strengthening air routes from the Philippines to key markets such as Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Japan, and South Korea is expected to boost tourism, business travel, and trade partnerships in the region.

The airline also aims to improve connectivity between major cities and underserved provincial hubs within the Philippines, helping stimulate economic growth and regional development. These efforts are in sync with the government’s broader vision of strengthening the country’s aviation infrastructure and promoting inclusive mobility.

AirAsia Philippines President and General Manager, Captain Suresh Bangah, said: “I am honoured to serve at the helm of AirAsia Philippines and look forward to working with the board members from AirAsia Aviation Group and AirAsia Philippines, Group CEO Bo Lingam, Ricky and the local team in one of our core markets to champion a new era of sustainable and profitable growth for the future. In this role, I am committed to leading our talented team of Allstars to elevate our operations while raising the bar on the end-to-end guest experience.”

“We’re firmly aligned with national efforts to grow the aviation and tourism sectors—from meeting rising demand for travel to supporting connectivity and infrastructure developments that will shape the future of travel in the Philippines. At the same time, we remain focused on addressing key external challenges—including global supply chain delays affecting aircraft maintenance, rising fuel costs, higher airport charges, and environmental factors that can impact operations.

A Vision for the Future

Captain Suresh’s appointment arrives at a time when the global aviation industry is experiencing a robust recovery. His vision for AirAsia Philippines includes deepening employee engagement, fostering innovation, and implementing sustainability-focused initiatives that align with global environmental goals.

The appointment of Captain Suresh Bangah as President and GM of AirAsia Philippines marks a pivotal step forward for the airline as it positions itself for growth, resilience, and innovation. With a deep understanding of aviation dynamics, proven leadership, and a forward-thinking approach, Captain Suresh is set to elevate the airline’s presence in the region while delivering a superior travel experience to millions of passengers.

“With strong foundations in place, we look forward to collaborating with our partners and stakeholders to strengthen the local aviation ecosystem, while advancing Asean connectivity to the world as we connect guests to what matters most, from education and work opportunities to family and new adventures.”

As AirAsia Philippines scales new heights under his stewardship, travelers can expect an exciting blend of reliable operations, broader route offerings, and enhanced digital services—all contributing to a more connected and seamless flying experience across Asia.
